Andy Cohen on Why His New Year’s Resolution was to Unplug from Social Media

Andy Cohen has learned not to let internet trolls or comments on social media get to him – in fact, he’s attempted to spend less time on his phone altogether. Arianna Huffington sat down with the Emmy Award-winning Bravo host, executive producer and New York Times bestselling author for a hilarious and insightful conversation about his career and love life and why his New Year’s resolution was to unplug from social media.

The TV personality hosted New Year's Eve Live with Anderson Cooper & Andy Cohen on CNN last year and while it was the most-watched NYE special ever, Andy told Ariana during their hour-long Thrive Global Podcast with iHeartRadio chat that he immediately felt stressed after reading reactions on Twitter.

“If I read something particularly horrible about myself or someone says something horrible about me then that will bring me stress and that has brought me stress,” Andy explained. “I mean, I think reading that thing on Twitter after New Year's brought me stress and it made me – it brought me tumult … it put me off center – and so I how I dealt with that was, I mean, the second thing I did, I called my mom the next day and I said, ‘You're my best critic, was it horrible?’ She goes, ‘No, I really liked it.’ So that made me feel better. And then I just had to recalibrate … It just made me think about social media … and then the news came out that it was the highest rated New Year's on CNN and I was like – can I say the F-word on this podcast? — I was like, ‘F--k everybody.’”

The moment led to Andy aiming to spend less time on his phone.

“That's amazing because I think we are all shifting the culture,” Ariana told him. “We're all realizing that we've paid a heavy price by being always on, addicted to our phones ... and now we're course-correcting. The way to course correct faster is to have people who are admired, who are busy, who are productive, [and] who are successful proving that it can be done.”
