13-Year-Old Boy Stabs Teacher with Butcher Knife at Georgia Middle School

A 13-year-old middle school student in Georgia was taken into custody Monday after he allegedly stabbed a teacher with an 8-inch butcher knife the principal said.

According to Gwinnett County Public Schools spokesperson, Sloan Rich, the incident happened as students were changing classes in an 8th grade language arts classroom at Trickum Middle School in Lilburn,  Georgia.

In a statement emailed to parents, Principal Ryan Queen said the incident began when student called the teacher over and stabbed her in the chest with a knife that had been located in the boy's backpack.

The 13-year-old suspect then took another student hostage as a school resource officer was heading for the classroom. When the resource officer arrived, he disarmed the boy. No other students or teachers were hurt in the incident, Principal Queen said. The school was briefly put on lockdown during the situation.

"We have never had a situation like this at our school and I know we all are concerned about this and the fact that one of our Trickum Middle family was hurt at the hands of a student is very upsetting," the principal said. "I ask that you keep our teacher who was injured in your thoughts and prayers."

Queen said there did not appear to be any kind of previous issue between the student and teacher before Monday's incident.

The school district says they are not publicly releasing the name or condition of the teacher who was stabbed.

Student Mason Watler described to WSB in Atlanta how he helped save the teacher's life.

"I saw that she was bleeding, so I looked over and took off my jacket and put it where she was bleeding," Watler said.

The student says he told his classmates to run and and find another teacher. "Get out of the classroom. Go get a teacher," he said.

Classes were back in session Tuesday afternoon, with counselors on hand for any students who wish to talk about the injured teacher. Security was also tightened at the middle school.
