Before she became an award-winning country artist, Lainey Wilson tried her hand at songwriting for the first time.
She was 9 years old.
Wilson reflected on the first song she ever wrote when she appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show on Thursday morning (March 16), along with actor Zachary Levi. The reigning CMA Female Vocalist of the Year told host Kelly Clarkson that her first-ever song was called “Lucky Me,” (Clarkson’s was called “Baby Blue Eyes,” she remembered).
“I wrote mine at a sleepover,” Wilson told the original American Idol champ. “(I was) 9 years old, and (my friend) went to one room, I went to the other. We were like, ‘let’s write a song and come back and share it with each other!’”
Clarkson asked, with a laugh, “was her song crap, and yours was really good?!”
“I mean, one ended up being a songwriter, one didn’t!” Wilson laughed in response. Then, she treated Clarkson, Levi and the audience to an a cappella rendition of the song she wrote at 9 years old. “It ain’t real good, but I’m gonna sing it for you.”
Now, Wilson is known for smash-hit anthems like “Hold My Halo,” “WWDD,” “Small Town, Girl,” “Watermelon Moonshine,” “Things A Man Oughta Know” and, of course, “Heart Like A Truck,” among other fan-favorites. In addition to her first-ever song that she wrote at a sleepover, Wilson took the stage on The Kelly Clarkson Show to perform “Heart Like A Truck.” Watch her interview clip here:
